About Our Hospital

Heritage Animal Hospital

Heritage Animal Hospital is a full service Hospital that provides excellent medicine, surgery, dentistry, grooming, and boarding services. Started in 1991 by Dr. Silverstein and Dr. Carter, Heritage Animal Hospital has steadily grown over the years from a converted chiropractic office to the upbeat fully staffed and equipped veterinary hospital that it is today. Veterinary interns flock to us, Certified Veterinary Technicians choose us as an employer, and the community refers fellow pet owners to us in unbelievable numbers. I am proud of the level of pet care demanded by owners and provided by our staff. I hope this never changes.
- R. Silverstein, DVM

Meet Our Doctors

Richard B. Silverstein, DVM
Dr. SilversteinDr. Silverstein established Heritage Animal Hospital in April of 1991. He is a 1988 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine and also holds a Bachelor's degree in biology from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. Professional affiliations include the AVMA, AAHA, AAFP, IAVPM and MVMA. Dr. Silverstein has a special interest in technology and its applications to diagnosis and patient care. If you want to distract him from his veterinary practice, ask him about his family, most recent ski trip or marathon or farming with his 1957 tractor.

Colleen L. Carter, DVM
Dr. CarterDr. Carter was raised in Morris, IL on a working farm. In 1986 she graduated "magna cum laude" with a Bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry from North Central College in Naperville, IL. She earned her veterinary degree, "with honors" from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Carter is the wife of Dr. Silverstein and mom to Sarah and Jacob. Hobbies include showing and breeding American Saddlebred horses, barn work, reading and keeping up with Dr. Silverstein and the kids.

Meet Our Staff

Our medical staff come from diverse backgrounds including: human healthcare, electronics, customer service, and food service. Several of our staff hold Bachelor's Degrees and all of our technicians are Certified Veterinary Technicians and members of Minnesota Association of Veterinary Technicians (MAVT). Our groomers have almost 30 years combined experience as well.

Certified Veterinary Technician
Our Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVTs) are the "RNs" of the pet world and work under the direct supervision of the Veterinarians. Veterinary Technicians take x-rays, give injections, run lab tests, prepare the patient for surgery, perform dental care, provide clients with pet education and do much, much more. Furthermore, our CVTs manage our radiology safety department, help us to meet OSHA standards, take care of equipment maintenance, and handle inventory control to make sure we are always equipped for your next pet food request or medical emergency.

Office Coordinators
Our Office Coordinators (receptionists), Loron and Stephanie, look forward to greeting and meeting you with each and every phone call or visit.  Managing the hundred or so patient interactions at the front desk each day is no easy task but these ladies handle it with style!  Loron comes from a financial background and Stephanie grew up in a veterinary clinic (dad and sis are vets) out of state and graduated from University of Kansas with a Strategic Communications degree.

Veterinary Assistant
Our Veterinary Assistants are the "Physician Assistants" of the pet world and work closely with the Certified Veterinary Technicians assisting them in a variety of ways (i.e. gently holding the cat or dog while the CVT gives him/her a vaccination or takes an x-ray).

Kennel Staff
Our kennel staff is dedicated to providing the best care to your pet while you are away. Your pet is walked, fed, petted, hugged and loved by us. Your dog/cat's safety, health, comfort and overall well-being are of supreme importance to our staff.

Meet Our Groomers

Our GroomersDarcy graduated "top in her class" from Twin Cities School of Pet Grooming and has been grooming dogs since 1989. She has the styling expertise for each and every breed of dog. When not busy making your dog look beautiful, you will find Darcy either riding her Quarter Horse, "Josie," with the Minnesota Equestrian Drill Team (a portion of the team's proceeds go to breast cancer research), or volunteering her two horses to the organization, "We Can Ride," (a therapeutic riding program for disabled children). Darcy also has a Shih Tzu named "Ozzie" and a Siamese Mix cat named "Abby."

Anna was trained through Petco's grooming facility and has been grooming for 6
years.  If she isn't here making sure your
pet has the most luxurious day at the "spa" as
possible; you might find Anna playing with her son,
caring for her magestic saltwater fish (reminiscing about
the days back in Australia), or singing and playing the
drums. Anna loves spending time with her
family and two furry children Eddy, a Chinese Crested,
   and Charlie, a terrier mix.

The staff here at Heritage Animal Hospital is very well trained in the care of animals and their owners!
